Functional Description:

Canters are used to process logs, or blocks, into flitches, cants and boards.  A canter usually consists of a log turner, double or single length infeed, chipping section and a saw section.  The chipping heads can be conical disc or drum head style.  The saws can be circular or band saws.

With a single pass machine the log turner, infeed, chipping heads, saw section and gang edger are all in one main machine.  The log or block is optimized once and that position / sawing solution is used for all axis of log turning, positioning, chipping and sawing.  Flitches and boards are produced.
Double and single length infeed canter systems typically scan the log for optimum rotation and rescan in the infeed after rotation.  After turning and rescanning, the log is skewed and / or tilted then slewed in the infeed as it is being fed to the chipping section.  These canters can be two sided canters or four sided canters and can be cant only or produce side boards (flitches).  With a four sided canter a bottom spline is produced on the bottom of the cant to guide piece through the canter.  At the canter outfeed the spline is removed with a spline remover head.
Sharp chain log reducers consist of a pipe log turner and sharp chain infeed.  The log is rotated and impaled onto the sharp chain.  The sharp chain transports the log through the chipping heads and saws.

Bandmills are used to remove side boards, or flitches, from the sides of a cant or log from a canter or sharp chain primary breakdown system as well as a resaw for boards or flitches.

Bandmills on primary breakdown canters and sharp chain reducers are either a twin bandmill or quad bandmill. The bandmill is mounted directly behind the chipping heads to remove side boards (flitches) from the cants or logs. The bandmills position is controlled based on the size of the log or cant being processed. Ripsaws for secondary breakdown can be single, twin, triple or quad band mills and mounted vertical or horizontal. Band mills for a carriage (head rig) are single band mills with either single or double cut.

A band mill consists of a frame (husk) with a top and bottom wheel.  The band saw is mounted on the wheels. The drive is on the bottom wheel The top wheel pivots to allow tension of the band saw.

Tensioning of the bandmill is accomplished with mechanical, hydraulic or pneumatic strain.  As lateral forces are exerted on the bandsaw during the sawing process, the top wheel will be allowed to lower allowing the saw to flex. The strain system will rapidly re-tension the strain on the saws to pull the saw line back into position.

Circular Saw Boxes:

Circular saw boxes are used behind canters to remove side flitches from cants as they are processed through the canter.  These saw boxes can be twin circular saws or quad circular saws.

Typically a circular saw box will be double arbour with an arbour on top and on the bottom for each set of saws.  There are some circular saw boxes for smaller logs that only have bottom saws.
