Functional Description:

Planers and molders are used to provide a uniform finished size and a smooth surface on lumber.  Typically a planer has four (4) planning heads.  A top head, bottom head and side heads.  These heads contain knives that provide the finish.  There are 16 to 24 knives per head depending on the feed speed required.  Some planers will have in excess of 24 knives per head.  The planning heads rotate counter to the direction of feed.

The infeed to the planer has bedrolls and pineapple rolls to feed the rough boards into the planer machine.  Planers can be driven hydraulically or electrically.
